11+ in Trafford: Grammar Schools & Preparation Guide
Trafford is one of the most competitive 11+ areas in the North of England. The borough's five state grammar schools — including Altrincham Grammar, Sale Grammar and Urmston Grammar — attract applications from across Greater Manchester.
Trafford Grammar Schools
All five Trafford state grammar schools use the CEM (Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring) 11+ test — not GL Assessment. This is an important distinction: CEM tests are deliberately harder to prepare for using standard practice papers, making broad vocabulary and reading comprehension even more important.

⚠️ Trafford uses CEM, not GL Assessment
Unlike many grammar school areas, Trafford's consortium uses CEM tests. CEM questions are released fresh each year and are not replicated in commercially available practice papers — making genuine vocabulary and comprehension ability more important than drill-and-practice.
Verbal Reasoning & English
CEM Verbal tests vocabulary in context, comprehension, cloze passages (fill-in-the-gap), and word relationships. The questions are embedded in reading passages rather than presented as isolated question types. Wide reading and a strong active vocabulary are the most effective preparation.
Mathematics
CEM Maths covers the standard Year 6 curriculum with extension content. Numerical reasoning, word problems, and data interpretation are common. Speed is key — children are expected to complete a large number of questions in a short time.
Spatial Reasoning
Some CEM tests include spatial or non-verbal reasoning. Check individual school admissions guidance as this varies between Trafford schools.
Key Dates for Trafford 11+

Test Date: The Trafford consortium test is usually held in September of Year 6 (often a Saturday).
Results: Typically released in October of Year 6.
School Application: Manchester's secondary transfer deadline is 31 October. Grammar preferences must be listed on the Trafford or home-LA CAF form.
How to Prepare for Trafford CEM 11+
Read Widely & Often
CEM verbal tests reward genuine reading ability. Aim for 20–30 minutes of challenging reading daily from Year 4 onwards.
Build Active Vocabulary
CEM tests vocabulary in context — children need to understand unfamiliar words from surrounding text. Game-based vocabulary practice accelerates this.
Don't Over-Rely on Past Papers
CEM questions are new each year. Practising isolated question types is less effective than building genuine verbal ability.
Practise Under Pressure
CEM papers are fast-paced. Timed practice from Year 5 onwards helps children manage the pace of the real test.
